About This Site
This site was originally launched in 2012 as a wedding present for a Quon cousin. It was relaunched in 2022.

Beyond serving as a scrapbook for the extended Quon family, this site will, I hope, be of value to anyone with an interest in the Chinese-American experience or in researching their own family.

All images are from my personal collection unless otherwise noted.

About Dede Huang
A Quon on my mother’s side, I am an independent researcher and family historian interested in uncovering Chinese American stories, retelling them in visually compelling ways, and keeping them relevant.

This site has been greatly enriched by feedback from family members, former Quon Mane customers, Quon scholarship recipients, and others. Thanks for writing in!

Just saw this through Vintage San Diego on fb. I only wanted to say . . . I grew up in downtown San Diego because my family had an insurance brokerage in the old BofA Building on Broadway. By about age 10 or so (mid 50s) I was allowed to wander around the immediate vicinity. My favorite store by far was Quon Mane's. The people there were always very kind to me and I have never forgotten it. I still have a few things that I bought there as a kid including a box of incense!!

Just wanted to say thank you for being wonderful folks!!
Shucks! We'll take it! This would have been the Quon Mane store's 6th incarnation at "5th & B" (1179 Fifth Street).

I met Albert Quon once when USC nominated me to be a recipient of scholarship he funded. After teaching in Hong Kong I visited his office to express my gratitude via his son. I’m now 77 and am pleased to find this Website!
Read Albert's own story about his college path here and here, and you'll understand why it was important to him to make scholarships possible.

Dan Kwong (3/11/2014)
hi Dede - Been trying to find info about the Quon-Quon business itself. Was it located at 843 Los Angeles Street? I have been searching for a photo of the building exterior, but no luck. It's where my parents met in 1951! Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. best regards, Dan
I didn't know as much about genealogy when Dan wrote in. It should be easy to find this information in a city directory, perhaps on Ancestry.com.

Robin Lung (4/5/2013)
Hi Dede: I just wrote a long email message to you in the contributions section. I didn't realize you were the amazing historian that put this whole thing together. I'm doing a documentary on Li Ling-Ai and the long lost 1941 Oscar Winning film on China she helped to produce called KUKAN. see http://findingkukan.com for more info. I'd love to talk with you to find out more about the Quons connection to the Lis and how they might fit into the story. aloha, Robin
Watch this film! Li Ling-Ai was so ahead of her time - but I don't think my Popo approved of this cousin.

My LOVE and HEARTFELT WISHES TO [the cousins for whom this site was launched] for an ETERNITY of wedded bliss as they take LIFE'S journey together. "Love shared is LOVE multiplied!"

Aunt Elsie
There's a reason everyone loved Auntie Elsie!

Diana L. Ho (7/14/2012)
Dede - You've cooked up something far more yummy than a casserole! Not only a gift to [...], but a treasure for the entire family. Many, many thanks!!!
Diana is the only relative I know who loves delving into family history as much as I do.  A lot of the photos on this site are due to her digitizing efforts.
