Congratulations to Robin Lung of Nested Egg Productions! Her film Finding Kukan recently received a Documentary Special Mention for Women in Film at the Hawaii International Film Festival 2016 and also premiered at DOC NYC 2016. A film about a film, it tells the story of Lily's cousin Li Ling-Ai, an Asian-American artist ahead of her time.

Lily kept in touch with many of her Hawaii relatives, but I have yet to see or hear Ling-Ai/Gladys' name mentioned, so I have no reason to believe that Lily had any special affinity for this cousin. In fact, I think Lily would have looked askance at her unconventional ways. But perhaps she at least appreciated that her cousin helped bring the Sino-Japanese war to the attention of the American public.

Robin and I struck up a cyber-acquaintance because of this website, and I hope before too long to meet Robin in person and see her film.

Catch this film wherever you can!

That would be me, Dede, a Quon on my mother's side.
