Image: This photo in the San Diego Reader in 1986 is reversed (look at the calligraphy) and mis-captioned as 1903 San Diego. The occasion was the 90th birthday of Quon Mane's mother, c. 1915, presumably in Long Har village.

Long Har Village (Courtesy of the San Diego History Center)
It's not known why these photos are in the SDHC archives, while only a relatively poor quality copy of the first photo remains in family hands.

Taken in c. 1915, they may give the impression that the Quons came from wealth, but in fact reflect wealth funneled back to China over decades, starting from the 1870s.

Only Other Images of Village Life
In 1910, Quon Mane gently bragged to authorities that he was a Kodak shutterbug.
Picture
He said: "The above photograph [is] from a kodack [sic] picture of said applicant [his nephew Albert] taken by myself at the back of my house in the Village of Long Har, Hoy Ping District, Province of Canton, China in the first part of K. S. 31st, year [=1905]".

San Diego, 1910s & 1920s (2nd Generation)
These photos of mainly male Chinese America add counterpoint to the village photo in this page's first album
For 1st generation photos from the 1880s onwards, see Brothers Between Lands.
